PixInsight for Newbies

After a night of catching photons, you can hardly wait to see and share the cosmic beauty of your photographs! While many options for deep-sky image processing software exist, none can match PixInsight for its versatility. As a very powerful program, the learning curve can seem daunting to the new user, but we’d like to show you that it’s not! In this workshop, we’ll take the mystery out of PixInsight, and show you how to produce pleasing results in just a few, simple steps.

Warren Keller and Ron Brecher have teamed up to deliver a series of information-packed ‘Virtual Workshops’ covering deep-sky image processing with PixInsight. Each 2-hour session will show beginners the most important tools and settings needed to create jaw-dropping astrophotos!  Working directly with Warren and Ron, and practicing with the data and resources provided, you’ll move confidently from beginner to experienced user in no time.

The first Virtual Workshop will demonstrate a compact workflow for producing color images, including:

  • Understanding the PixInsight user interface

  • Evaluating the quality of individual subframes

  • Making master frames from one-shot color and monochrome (R, G, B) subframes

  • Processing the masters using a basic ‘process icon set’

  • Saving a project for future use

  • Saving a JPEG to share

Future Virtual Workshops will expand on this basic workflow and delve more deeply into specialized topics.

  • Two full data sets including lights, darks, biases, and flats
